About Coast Basketball

Coast players on court

The Hibiscus Coast Basketball Association (HCBA) was formed in the early 1980s and has been a cornerstone of the local basketball community ever since. We won the upper North Island regional championships and qualified for Nationals early in our history, going on to claim two National titles in 2015 and 2016.

Today HCBA is a community-driven association supporting basketball across our local primary and secondary schools, running competitive leagues, and developing representative teams from U12s to U20s — girls and boys.

Our values of growth, commitment and team are central to everything we do on and off the court.

The Junior Development Programme

Coast player driving to basket

The JDP (Junior Development Programme) gives your child the opportunity to compete against associations from across Zone 1 — Northland, Hibiscus Coast, North Harbour, Waitakere, Auckland, Counties Manukau and Franklin. Teams are graded by ability and compete in the Zone 1 Super City Competition, with selected players also representing Coast at the Northern Regional Championships.

Excellence

Compete at the highest level and strive for personal best every session and game.

Development

Expose promising athletes to high-quality basketball that challenges and grows their game.

Team First

Honesty and respect between players, coaches and parents — a squad approach throughout.

Coast Style of Play

We introduce players to the Hibiscus Coast Style of Play — a motion-style system that values position-less play, game understanding and a flexible skill set. It's an enjoyable and effective approach that develops well-rounded players.

Offensive Principles

  • Motion-style offense with continuous movement
  • No fixed positions — play is flexible
  • Efficient shot selection
  • Creating opportunities through movement
  • Reducing turnovers

Defensive Principles

  • Man-to-man defense
  • Defending without fouling
  • Footwork to avoid travels
  • Stopping on balance
  • Using both hands effectively

On the Day

  • Arrive 30 minutes early to confirm registration and collect trial numbers
  • Trial times are listed on the website — check before you come
  • No spectators during trial sessions, thank you
  • Players should attend all trials to give themselves the best opportunity to be seen by coaches
  • Please ensure you are sized for a uniform at trials so that orders can be made in time for the season

Parent Induction

Parent inductions will be held at the start of trials on 6th and 7th June, in a classroom on the ground level of Whangaparaoa College. One parent per family must attend at least one induction.

After Trials

  • For boys' trials, callback emails will be sent by the end of the day on Monday 8 June
  • Team selections will be made by our coaching team and communicated during the final two weeks of June
  • Selections will be communicated by 17 June — if offered a spot, please confirm your place as soon as possible so that uniforms can be ordered

Selectors look for a combination of the following — prior inclusion or exclusion in past teams does not influence this year's decisions. A lot can change quickly at these ages!

Character & Attitude

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Genuine love for the game
  • Team-first mindset
  • Competitiveness and work rate
  • Vocal leadership

Basketball Skills

Player Commitment

Coach talking to team

Accepting a place in a Coast team is a season-long commitment. We ask all players to honour that commitment to their teammates, coaches and the club.

  • Attend all nominated training and skill sessions
  • Attend all games and trainings — even when injured (but not when ill)
  • Report all injuries to coaches before playing or training
  • Give advance notice of any school, family or sporting conflicts
  • Meet all financial commitments (payment plans available — contact Operations Manager)
  • Speak directly with the coach and team manager if unable to meet any commitment
  • U14 players: complete the community referee course and attend basketball workshops
Our goal is long-term athlete development — giving every player a quality experience as they begin their journey in competitive basketball.

Parent Involvement

Coast Basketball runs because of our amazing parent community. Here's how we need your help:

Team Manager

Each team needs a parent team manager. Responsibilities include team communications via TeamReach, liaising with the Treasurer on fee payments, and coordinating game day operations (scorebench, score sheets, bench management).

Scorebench

All parents and caregivers are required to assist on the scorebench. This is essential for games to be able to be played — without scorebench volunteers, games cannot go ahead. Your team manager will coordinate a roster throughout the season. Resources are available on the Coast website.

Volunteer Assistant Coaches

There are opportunities for parents and whānau to be involved as volunteer assistant coaches. If this is of interest to you, please reach out to Dan Bungard to talk more about what's involved.

Carpool

Away games can involve travel across Auckland. We encourage families to organise carpooling within teams — your team manager can help coordinate this.

09

Behaviour & Code of Conduct

Photos & Media

By registering with HCBA, you consent to photos and video being taken at events for use in club promotional materials, social media, newsletters and funding applications. HCBA takes particular care with imagery of children and young people.

If you do not wish your child to be photographed, notify HCBA in writing prior to participation. While we will make every effort to accommodate this, exclusion from all background or group images in public settings cannot be guaranteed.
